Greetings and salutations!
I’ve been making sort-of-games for about 15 years now. I had not really realized how long it had been until I did the math just now.
I would say it started during my first programming course back in university. We were studying data structures, and the professor asked us to try and implement something that could solve mazes. I tinkered with that for a weekend, but after it was working, with a terrible implementation, I was intrigued; what if instead of solving mazes, it could make them? what if the user could solve them? and so, back then, being an even worse programmer than I am today, and a bit over 1000 lines of bad Java later, I had a little game-like thing.
Not too long after that, a classmate and I thought making an actual game would be easy; “let’s make one this weekend!” we said. And so, after a weekend of trying to learn LibGDX, and reinventing the wheel, we had about 0.5% of a tower defense game. It never went anywhere from there.
Fast-forwarding from that humbling experience, and skipping some smaller experiments, I joined a gamejam with a friend. We made a little space shooter game with an Atari-inspired style. It was so much fun working on that, and the game was still posted last time I checked.
And that was the last project I actually showed anyone.
I didn’t stop experimenting; making prototypes of ideas I thought would be fun, or at the very least interesting. Many ended more like an approximation to digital art than a game. Most I just didn’t find the will to continue them. And the pile just grew.
And as years passed, I would get frustrated, because new games would appear, with the exact same ideas I had before, and I would hate myself for just sitting on those prototypes and let other people beat me to the punch.
I kept telling myself, “you can’t finish a game. You’re not an artist, nor a musician; you’re just a boring programmer”, and, “no one will care if you make a game”.
The truth is that I still tell myself both things. Every day.
But despite that, I decided that, even if my games are ugly, sound weird, have much too simple music; and posting them is just talking to a wall… I do enjoy making these games, and I can hope perhaps someone will find them who will enjoy playing them.
There is really not much more I can ask.
Thank you if you read all this. I hope you will find my games interesting.
TLDR: I really like tacos.
